Root of all evil?

It is amazing how quickly overtime at work can kill any chance of you having a social life, let alone try to keep up on blogs and such. I have averaged 60 hours a week, every week, since June. This next pay week will be the first one since then that I have not picked up a single overtime shift. My usual work week, I get all my hours in 3 days and then get a 4 day weekend. Which is how I can go about picking up so many hours a week and still having at least one day off. As much as I am glad to be rid of the overtime, I am soooooo going to miss the overtime money that was coming from it. Money is the root of all evil, or at least that's what I was taught. However, without money, nothing good happens, so is it money that is the root of all evil, or is it greed that is the root of all evil. Because with all of the money I was bringing in, I did nothing inherently evil with it. In fact I paid off bills, I bought things needed for the house, I bought things needed for my kids, I helped ...

Why yes, I'll have two orders of sleep and a side of sanity please

I love being a parent. I wanted to make sure I started this post with that sentence so that no one thinks anything less. With that being said, I really really really wish my children would sleep. Well, more I wish they would choose the days I work as days they are willing to sleep all night, rather than my days off. I mean, come on, its not that hard, daddy gets all his hours in three days at work, and if he doesn't pick up overtime, that equals four day weekends every week. That means three nights out of seven, daddy needs to get to bed on time, and get up early. However it always seems to be those three nights that the children dont want to go to bed, have bad dreams and come join me in bed, wake up crying and needing put back to bed, or just dont feel like sleeping so they stay up late and wake up early. The biggest problem would be with me however. I don't sleep well even when the kids aren't here, that part isnt thier fault. I am pretty sure I have sleep apnea, and ...

Another review? Ready Player One book review coming up...

So lately I've been really into audiobooks, they pass the time well, keep my mind occupied, and allow me to multitask while I do them. So I joined Audible.com and wasnt sure exactly what series I really wanted to go through. I had gotten a free credit and had heard really good things about the a book called Ready Player One. It was an author I had never heard of, but it came with rave reviews and was narrated by Will Wheaton, so hey, how could I say no? I was hooked right from the begginning. The premise of the book isnt that far fetched, its 30 years or so in the future, the world is ravaged and falling apart, and the most of the population spends the majority of their time in The Oasis, a virtual reality world that is more powerful than any world government. The currency in The Oasis is worth more than any actual real money, most peoples jobs revolve around the oasis, and even the homeless live in tent citys with used virtual gear leaching off free wifi access spots. In the b...

Sometimes you need a gentle reminder that murder is illegal

Ever run into someone, and within just a few minutes of talking to them, you realize that you hate them? I know that sounds pretty harsh, and you're probably thinking, "damn Bert, what the hell man?" Yet, I know without a shadow of a doubt the moment you read that, the very moment you finished reading the first sentance a name popped into your head. Don't lie, as you are reading this your mind is playing back the first time you met that person, and you are reliving the moment you realized that you were going to hate them, no matter how hard you tried not to. You think of that person and you realize that the world might just be a better place if they weren't using up precious air and resources to get more energy to fuel thier stupidity. It's okay, it doesn't make you a bad person, at all. It means that you are human, and that you are secure enough in who you are to know that your personality and thiers is going to clash. Its usually more than one thing abo...

Posting From Corinne, Warlord and Infamous Lush of Zip code 49505

Hello, again, blogger. It's been a long time since we've had such intimate and (sometimes highly inappropriate ) discussions. My laptop has made it damn near impossible to keep up a blog. For one, my "m" key is missing. So is the Shift key. So it's a little hard to use. Ehhh errrrr. Whatever. On to the first sweaty glass of Sauvignon Blanc. MMmmmm. And it's just perfectly chilled, too! And on we go. Let's start with that. Oh, this bottle is going to be good. Topic for the night: When adult-ing isn't fun anymore and you just want to crawl into a Mcdonald's Play Area tunnel and live there the rest of your days. Yes. I am utterly sick of being a self-sustaining, mature, placid adult. You know, those seniors? The ones over 70? Now THEY have their shit together. I'm a hairstylist. I've cut a lot of hair and I mean, a LOT OF HAIR. Most of it men's, elderly or small children's. Well, occasionally women, but the average wom...

Rescue Bots, my son's entrance into Transformers

So my son has a new favorite show, to the point that I scored huge points when I not only was willing to watch it with him, but got him some of the figures for his birthday. His new favorite show is Rescue Bots, and at first glance it is nothing more than another attempt to ruin a series from my childhood by trying to make it for todays children. On a second glance however the premise is pretty good, and the humor, learning, and plot in general goes beyond your normal kids shows. They took the basic Transformers idea, added in cameos from Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, and added in futuristic technology and a great voice cast. Come on, they have Lavar Burton, Tim Currey, Mark Hammil, Lacy Chabert all on there, you can't get much better than that, plus Optimus Prime is voiced by Peter Cullen, you know, the original voice of Optimus Prime. The premise is that the AutoBots are currently in hiding on earth, so the town that these bots are assigned to is not to know that they are sentie...

How about a movie review for World War Z Unrated??

Decided to watch World War Z Unrated on Netflix last night and thought I might do a bit of a review about it on here. Hmmm, where to begin.... well, first off, for everyone who is upset that it didn't follow the book all to well, you're right, it doesn't. That book has a great story, but would be rather hard to turn into a two hour movie. The basic story concept however was fantastic and the perfect way to go about telling the origin story of a zombie type apocalypse. As with most movies of the genre, it started with a calm family, on a calm day, just like any other day. Mom and Dad and kids are happy and content and the news plays in the background giving you subtle hints that shit is about to go down. Of course no one in the house is paying attention to the news however so they go about their day as if nothing is wrong. For me that is the perfect way to start any apocalyptic movie. If you start the movie already mid chaos its hard to get attached to the characters beca...

What ever happened to plot development

Anyone else notice how many shows now a days, especially nerdy shows, rely heavily on the monster of the week route? Sometimes going three or four episodes without dealing with any of the meat of the show. I'm starting to think that's the problem with American television over other countries. Our shows are written by teams of writers and often have 15+ episodes per season, and they run out of good story and need to fill the gap. Shows that average 10 episodes a season are filled with drama, comedy, story, twists, and depth on a much grander scale. Well, maybe, it's not so much about being American or not, there are good American shows that don't rely heavy on being formulaic, but most of them appear to be on channels and services based on subscription. So do I need to take a channels budget into account then? Shows like DaVinci's Demons, Game of Thrones, Daredevil, Carnival, Dexter (first few seasons at least) all have great story and plot development without being...

Hmmmm first post.....

Where do I even begin? Well, I guess first off my name is Byron, though my nerdy friends call me Bert (long story), and I am a nerd. Not any specific kind of nerd, more just a general love for nerdy things kind of nerd. Fan of trek and wars, fan of Stargate and firefly, fan of video games though more RTS and puzzle than FPS. Big fan of technology in general and long for the day that I have the money to be at the forefront of things, I am usually about a step or two behind, but only because of money. Laptop is almost 4 years old, newest game console is an xbox360 slim; the TV is 1080p but 3 years old. I do try to keep up with the latest phones and gear for that, got note 3, Plantronics voyager earpiece, Bluetooth keyboard, Chromecast for the TV, just need a galaxy gear smart watch and I'll be happy with that end of it. Away from technology I am a large sci-fi fantasy fan. From Doctor Who to Star Trek, from Stargate (minus Stargate universe which was a horrible attempt to cross ...
